That said, this is still a fair review, and Supermicro had no input or requirements for this video, or any future projects on the channel.

AMD's Epyc Turin architecture has been out for over a year now, but that doesn't make it any less exciting. Zen 5 might have been a bit of a letdown on the consumer side of things, but the efficiency and performance gains in their server chips has been an absolute game changer.

Case in point, the AMD Epyc 9965, featuring 192 Zen 5c cores running at up to 3.7GHz, making for a single server with 384-Cores and 768-Threads, along with 24-Channels of DDR5-6400. This thing is an absolute beast.

Datacenters use a ton of power, and "how much power" is a number that gets larger everyday. But it's not just the power that's holding things back. Cooling, water consumption, and even land use are all major factors for modern datacenters to solve, and Panthalassa is an Oregon-company that might have just figured out how to make it all work, and their solution is fully renewable.

NVIDIA's GTC 2026 kicked off with the announcement of Vera Rubin, and the show floor was packed with vendors showing off both their latest hardware, as well as software packages to take advantage of the AI craze.

You're right in assuming that *most* of the software booths were filled by LLMs, chatbots, and other types of generative slop factories. But are there any companies actually using all of this processing power to solve real problems that exist today?

Camb.ai is a live translation service, specializing in media localization for things like TV, News, Sports and Movies. I was particularly interested in their sports translation, as it solves a number of edge-cases not typically handled well by translation services. (https://camb.ai)

SkillReal was demoing their In-Line manufacturing quality control software, which uses cameras placed on a manufacturing line to monitor and track features during manufacturing. Rather than rely on previous photos of parts, it automatically overlays the original CAD model over captured images, and tracks individual features for placement and accuracy. Years ago, I wrote a tutorial around getting Pi Hole to work as a Recursive DNS server using Unbound. It was an easy way to add a bit of privacy and security into PiHole's already awesome feature set. But because it used Unbound on the backend, there was no way to monitor or troubleshoot DNS once it left Pi Hole.

Technitium is another Open-Source DNS Server, but with a much more robust feature set for all things DNS. Do you need a fully Recursive DNS server? How about a Local DNS Server for internal services? An Authoritative DNS Server for hosted services? DNS-Level Ad Blocking? Technitium offers all of that and more, all in a lightweight package that can run on literally any hardware.

The X79 Microcloud Project has been a huge success, with all of my VMs and Backups currently running on the 13 year old cluster. But X79 isn't the only architecture for this chassis. Supermicro also made an X99 (Intel C612) Node, as well as a Xeon D Embedded node, with a Xeon D-1541. What features are available on these newer nodes, and did I make a huge mistake buying into such an old architecture?

VPNs don't keep you safe from password thieves and hackers... mostly because those threats were eliminated by standard security practices on every major website nearly 10 years ago. But that doesn't mean VPNs are useless. They can be used to tunnel your traffic to another part of the world, get you access to shows and events that aren't available in your region, and even help obfuscate your online footprint. Today, I'm going to show you how to set up a VPN Gateway, which allows ANY device to connect through a commercial VPN to either spoof what region you live in, or hide your activity from prying eyes.

I've used Trackballs since the 90s, and always preferred they to standard mice. But it wasn't until 2018 that I finally found a trackball that completely replaced mice for me...
