James Channel - Floatplane

These are all the video game things I get as I get them.

I’ve been collecting retro video games and arcade machines for more than half my life and fiddling with electronics for even longer.

I want to share the adventure! See the things I find, the things I fix, and the things I do with my collection.

I will post a photo of every single video game and arcade related item I get, even the ones I don’t plan to keep.

These two arrived recently.

The main difference between the variants is the subtext under “Nintendo Entertainment System” the French NES doesn’t look any different from the front though, it’s not really part of that set. What makes it special is the fact that France neither supported PAL nor NTSC video formats, and SECAM, the french equivalent was so bad that most consumer electronics skipped it completely and went for unencoded RGB via a connector known as SCART, or Peritel if you’re french.

So France got their very own consoles which usually only output RGB and nothing else.

RGB is unencoded so it’ll look amazing right?

Well…

For consoles which have RGB baked into the hardware yes, but the NES does not. So internally the French nes produces regular PAL composite video (the yellow AV plug on old TVs) then feeds it into a composite to RGB converter before chucking the results out the connector on the back, which is not a standard Nintendo port despite looking similar.

So the result looks just as bad or worse than the composite output on any PAL NES.

My set progress:

Got:

No subtext (NTSC/U)

Mattel Version

Hong Kong Version

Asian Version

Hyundai Comboy

Samurai Electronic TV Game

European Version

French scart

Need:

NES Version

Version Española Spanish Version (purchased; on its way)

Versione Italiana

The Nintendo Switch Ring-Con is definitely up there in the weird accessories category. It’s not actually a standalone controller despite the name, you have to slide a Joycon into it. It also comes with a strap to attach the other Joycon to your leg. The idea is that the motion sensors in the Joycons keep track of the ring movement and your body movement.

It came out in 2011 so it’s basically useless today, but it’s a cool piece of history and you can still manually side load games onto it if you’re keen.

I saw Bringus got one and FOMO made me order one 😂

Except… Two arrived. They came in identical padded bags with identical shipping labels. Somehow the business which sold it printed the shipping label twice and both went through the system. Nobody in packing, dispatch, or even the postal company noticed, despite having identical invoice numbers, tracking numbers, barcodes, etc.

Everyone involved in the invoicing, packaging, and delivery chain failed.

So I want your advice. Do I let the company absorb their failure? Or does it become my problem by telling them what happened and possibly having to go out of my way to post one back?
